AARP International — Japan

For AARP International’s annual publication, The Journal, we helped introduce a new editorial approach that focused each issue’s feature coverage on a single country through a more human-centered lens. The Japan edition was the first of these, exploring how the country is responding to demographic change not only through policy and innovation, but through everyday life, culture, and personal experience.

Working closely with the AARP team, we defined the editorial direction of the issue, determining the types of stories that would inform the publication’s voice and approach. Over three weeks in Japan, we documented a range of perspectives through photography, interviews, and reporting. The design drew from observations of Japanese art and culture, including a cover featuring an intricate paper sculpture of the Tokyo skyline constructed entirely by hand in our studio. Video stories extended the project further, offering a more intimate look at the people behind the broader trends.
