Cultural Threads

Cultural Threads is a story from AARP International’s The Journal, developed during our time in Kenya as part of a broader exploration of aging across East Africa. In shaping the editorial direction for the issue, we felt it was important to include Maasai perspectives and to document the ways cultural traditions continue to connect generations across the Mara.

We spent time with women participating in the Maa Beadwork program, where beadwork carries both cultural and economic significance and where beading sessions foster community and mutual support, particularly among older women. Through photography and interviews, we documented the story in several locations, including in more remote areas of the Naboisho Conservancy. The visual language of the story informed the broader design of the publication, which paired a minimal and contemporary layout with a bright palette inspired by Maasai clothing and beadwork.
