Aotearoa
For AARP International’s The Journal, we developed an editorial approach to aging in New Zealand/Aotearoa shaped by the country’s geography, cultural diversity, and strong sense of place. The issue explored how communities across the country are responding to demographic change, with attention to both urban and rural contexts and to Māori perspectives and traditions.

Working alongside AARP’s leadership team, we traveled across the country to document stories through photography, interviews, and reporting. The creative direction was deeply informed by our experience on the ground, particularly our time within Māori communities and our observations of the landscape and visual culture of Aotearoa. Typography, color palette, photography, and illustration styles all drew from these influences. The cover features a carved work photographed at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute in Rotorua, which we translated into a sculpted emboss with subtle foil detailing.
